Lucie and WPOY wins for SPILL

Rather than intermittently post photos from various sources of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year and Lucie award ceremonies from last fall, we decided to compile them into a single post to give them a better order.

Daniel accepts the award for Wildlife Photojournalist of the year from the Veolia Environment Wildlife Photography during a ceremony at the Natural History Museum in London.

Moments later, Daniel accepts an award for Wildlife Photographer of the Year. Beyond the honor for this recognition, it’s even cooler for the award statue being a commissioned glazed clay sculpture by Nick Mackman of a pelican (since the photo chosen was of the pelicans).

Daniel celebrates with friend Jack Dykinga, above, and with his father and brother, below.

A week later, Daniel attended the Lucie Awards at the Lincoln Center in New York. Here, he accepts a statue for his win in the International Photographer of the Year – Deeper Perspective category.

Following the ceremony, Daniel is greeted by filmmaker and friend Tad Fettig.

SPILL at Roca Gallery in Barcelona

We want to share with you some photos of SPILL’s European debut at the Roca Gallery in Barcelona late last year.

Large, borderless mounted prints are displayed in the basement level of this elegant modern building.

Being on three different levels around an open atrium, it is a very futuristic space, but it definitely makes for a unique viewing experience.

Daniel spoke about his photos following a press conference on the afternoon of the opening.

In the evening, a far different feeling as the neon lights from the neighborhood filter in the window walls of the gallery.

SPILL closes in Barcelona on January 29th and moves on to the Roca Gallery in Madrid, opening March 3rd, closing May 27th.

Update of recent videos

In the above video, the jury of SNAP: A National Juried Exhibition of Photography discuss selecting the images for the show at the Beford Gallery at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, California. The kind words spoken of Daniel’s SPILL work are much appreciated, as always.

Two pictures from Daniel’s SPILL portfolio were included for display with the rest of the SNAP exhibit at the Bedford Gallery until February 19th.

In addition, we also found a video previewing Daniel’s presentation for the opening of the exhibit at the Aquarium of the Pacific – recently extended until February 16th – online. It isn’t embeddable, so you’ll have to click thru to watch it on their site.

SPILL extended in Long Beach until Feb. 16th

We just got word that Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach has extended it’s display of Daniel’s SPILL portfolio for an extra month. It will now be on their walls until February 16th.

2011 Wildlife Photographer of the Year!

After last night’s awards ceremony, we’re extremely pleased and grateful to announce that Daniel has won the Veolia Environnement Wildlife Photographer of the Year award for his above photo of pelicans covered in oil from the BP Gulf spill in 2010. The contest is sponsored by Veolia Environment, the British Natural History Museum, and the BBC Wildlife magazine.

As if this news wasn’t fantastic enough, we also get to share the news that Daniel was also the Wildlife Photojournalist of the Year, which is a great honor just by itself.

A giant thank you for all of the recognition from this award for Daniel’s work.

Preview video of Roca Gallery exhibit

NG NewsWatch piece on Oil Spill

National Geographic’s NewsWatch page published a short photo essay by Daniel about the Gulf oil spill. The photos are all from Daniel’s “SPILL” portfolio, so they might be a little familiar to you. The ILCP helped facilitate this piece, and we’re thankful for the continued attention that the Spill story has been getting.

Sony World Photography Awards @ NYC

A print of Daniel’s from his work on the Prince’s Rainforests Project in 2009 was included in an exhibit for the Sony World Photography awards at the Chelsea Art Museum in Manhattan. The exhibit opens October 13th and runs until to November 6th. For more information, please go here.

Hopefully some of you in the NYC area will have the time and opportunity to check it out; we’re very glad and thankful to have Daniel’s work included.

SPILL to move on to L.A.

We’re hoping that the excellent reviews and exposure that Daniel’s “SPILL” exhibit on the Gulf oil spill has received will continue when it moves on to the Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach, California in October. Daniel will be giving a presentation at the opening of the exhibit on Thursday, October 13th. Dr. Larry McKinney, an oceanographer and director of the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, will also speak at the event. If you can’t wait until it officially opens, it should be up on the walls by early October.

And yes, since SPILL is going up in California, that means it will be coming off the walls at the Seattle Aquarium soon – on September 14th. If you’re in Seattle and haven’t seen it yet, hopefully you can get down there before SPILL departs for the Aquarium of the Pacific.

IPA given to Daniel for oil spill photos

Daniel’s photos from the Gulf of Mexico oil spill continue to garner awards from contests. The International Photography Awards (IPA) have given Daniel’s Gulf spill photos a first place in their “Environmental” category and named his entry as a finalist for their “Deeper Perspective” award (for some reason their gallery pages don’t actually name the awards received, but rest assured, they’re listed on the overall winner page).

The IPA apparently likes to build a bit of suspense for their more prominent awards, so we won’t find out if Daniel has won the Deeper Perspective category until it is announced at the 9^th Annual Lucie Awards on October 24^th, at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York. Our fingers are definitely crossed.
